Anfa Hotel, Casablanca

Anfa Hotel, Casablanca

The Anfa Hotel in Casablanca where Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt held their first meeting in conquered territory. That conference took place in January 1943. President Roosevelt flew by PanAm Clipper from Natal to Liberia and then by military aircraft to Casablanca. Prime Minister Churchill came in his converted bomber. Stalin was invited but did not attend. French Generals Giraud and de Gaulle were at the conference and agreed to the terms of the session, only to plan between themselves afterwards a quite different strategy. The Anfa Hotel remains and now has been enlarged and converted to a condominium complex. [M.C.S.]
